THE JAPANESE COMMUNITY
I would like to send my comments on the draft of Toronto’s Many Faces(New Edition) as below.
1 The Japanese Community
This chapter is describing about the history of Japanese Canadians. As such, you may wish to mention the following points:
(1) The redress agreement between Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and Japanese Canadians. As this is a Japanese Canadian matter, you may wish to consul the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre.
(2) That Japan and Canada today are vital partners within the international community who share fundamental values. Since the end of the Second World War, Japan has consistently walked the path of a peaceful nation, contributing to the world’s peace and prosperity.
(3) In 2028, Japan and Canada will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations. (In January 1928, Japan and Canada agreed to establish diplomatic relations. In July of the same year, the Japanese Legation opened in Ottawa). I understand that this guidebook is more about the GTA than Canada but so I leave it to your discretion as to whether this should be mentioned.
2 Places to Go
-
We added some information on the Sakura cherry blossoms. Please note that the photo was provided by the JCCC.
-
Much of the information, I am afraid, is out of date. We are not in a position to promote specific restaurants, but I recommend you check lists such as the Michelin Guide. There are many popular Japanese restaurants in Toronto now.
3 Holidays and Celebrations
Japan-related festivals in the GTA now include the following. We suggest you look into them and others:
Kampai Toronto

Washoku Matsuri

Japan Festival Canada

4 Organizations
(1)There are several schools of Ikebana. The major styles are Ikenobo, Ohara and Sogetsu, all with classes in Toronto. Sogetsu has the Toronto Branch and East Toronto branch.
(2)NAGATA SHACHU is the most celebrated Taiko drum group in Toronto.
5 Prominent Torontonians
We are not in a position to name specific individuals as prominent. You may wish to consider checking who have received prominent recognitions such as the Order of Canada.
6 Others
-
We suggest you not mention names of specific Consuls-General, as each remains in Toronto for just two years or a bit longer.
-
Please remove mention of our office and its staff from among your contributors.
